Careers in Software: Project Leader
A manager of a team of programmers, you make sure that the work is executed according to the requirements
A project leader or a module leader is a programmer who has worked for a couple of years, and has now been given managerial responsibilities. If you’re a PL you’ll work with a small team and will be responsible for a part of the project. You’ll distribute work based on the capabilities of each of the team members, most of whom are freshers). You also help them with problems they face. You’ll also be involved in coding.
Sound knowledge of technology
Programming experience of at least 3 years
Seek additional responsibility, and volunteer for extra work
Sound knowledge of the technology used in the project
Show inclination to be a leader
Is capable of handling people, and effectively coordinate the work
Project management capabilities
Have domain knowledge of more than one industry
What do you get to do?
Have long working hours when projects are nearing their end
Keep abreast with the latest with related technologies being used—by reading books, referring to Websites etc
Manage a team of 10 to 12 people, including people at the client’s site
Interact with the project manager, quality assurance, and programmers at every stage of the project
Discuss with your team the new developments, difficulties faced, solutions, and alternative ways of doing old things
You will get
A salary of Rs 20-35,000/month
Resources at your disposal, to be allocated to team members
Quite some time off to evaluate technologies, develop expertise in certain technologies and most of the programming will be done by other team members
2 to 4 trips to foreign countries every year
Design, delegate, coordinate and manage
Rahul of Netacross Communications, Delhi, works on Internet based technologies. The job involves design of the project, preparing the architecture object model, network design, and coordination between servers. He spends some time on programming also. He allocates work to the people in his team, monitors the progress on a daily basis, and helps them upgrade their know-how. He also tests the work done by the team for quality and adherence to the specification given, and check if the all the modules developed by different people work when put together. He also has to interact with the client some times.
Srinivas works for Sovika Infotek in Mumbai. He spends around four hours programming. He also interacts quite a bit with the quality assurance team, product managers, etc. His company sends people at his level for projects in the US regularly.
Ashish at Mphasis, Mumbai has knowledge of two domains computerizing stock trading, and software for doctors. He has worked in Singapore for four years. He likes the freedom at work, and doesn’t believe in giving up easily.
