Careers in Software: Project Manager
The buck stops here you’re entirely responsible for the different projects and people you’re handling
A project manager is directly associated with all aspects of a project right from negotiations to execution and delivery. He could be dealing with more than one clients. He does a cost benefit analysis (CBA), sets deadlines, decides upon the number of people and the man hours needed to execute the project. He also looks after the creative aspects of the project and the strategies to execute the project.
Expert on many domains
Sound domain knowledge in as many fields as possible
Management education degree, or self reading
6-8 years as programmer and project leader
Very strong technical and commercial know-how

It's good teamwork all the way
Amit Agarwal of Netacross Communications, Delhi is involved in managing people and servicing clients. He also looks at the technological aspects also. There’s quite a bit of work load, but the work environment is very enthusiastic as all his seniors consult him before finalizing things. He travels extensively to project and client locations, develop the prototypes and with the help of other teammates, design the major part of the project, so that only the development part is left.
Vijay K Sukthankar of IBM Global Services, Bangalore manages 2-3 projects at a time, and is involved in making proposals, getting orders and audits and reviews for quality of the software developed. He knows quite a bit about operating system internals, and feels that he would be the DGM in 4-5 years. He is very happy with the "family like" working environment offered by IBM and believes very strongly in teamwork.
