Careers in Software: Software Engineer/Programmer

Software companies are doing very well Infosys and Wipro have taken the NASDAQ by storm. Poeple in software jobs seem to be doing well too you know of people who are now in the US earning dollar salaries, or getting fat pay cheques and frequent trips abroad. As you stand at a crossroad trying to choose the right career, the software industry definitely does emerge as one of the most promising. And why not. According to NASSCOM, the software industry in India currently employees 280,000 people. This is expected to grow to 2.2 million people by 2008. And companies abroad are receptive to Indians because India has the second largest pool of scientific manpower which is also English speaking.

But you have to ask yourself is whether you’re geared up for a software career. Sound logic, excellent programming skills, a never ending thirst for learning new technologies, a good team person...the career does demand you to be all this and more. We bring you a bird’s eye view of a career path in software what you need to know, what you’ll do, what are your growth options, and so on so you can see for yourself whether you fit the bill.



Software Engineer or Programmer
Programming skills and some experience with live projects to break into the field of software

This is your breaking ground.You are armed with some certificates in programming and have had the chance to work on your friend’s father’s database project. Once you get into a company you’ll working on different types of projects depending on your skill and knowledge level. You could be developing operating systems, device drivers, or creating custom software for clients based on their requirements. And you get a lot of support from your seniors.

A graduate and a die-hard learner

You need to

be a graduate. BE in any discipline or MCA is preferred
have learnt programming
be strong on logical reasoning
have good communication and comprehension skills
be passionate about technology
be a die-hard learner
be someone who loves working with cutting edge technology
be in an intellectually challenging job
What do you get to do?

You will

Work from 9 to 6 on most days. You’ll need to stay late on the days when your project is nearing completion
Have to keep yourself updated on the latest happenings in technology. You do this by learning while working on projects and by training given by the company
Be a part of a team of 10 to 12 people, of which 2 to 4 are on site


You will get

Rs 6,000 to 14,000 depending on the company, your software experience, etc
Increments based only on performance. This is mostly on a six-month basis
An informal work environment
Appreciated for your work


A new experience with every project

Janardhana Reddy works for Linc Software, Bangalore. He writes programs (also called coding) that takes up most of his time. He also tests and debugs (removing errors from) his programs. He attends team meetings too. In the time that’s left he checks his mail and plans his work. He takes tea-breaks but they are kept short as he likes to maintain the flow of his thoughts, which is required for programming.

22-year old SriRam works in Pune for Scala Mindworks. He says that this is a great career as every program he writes is a new experience, which makes his job very exciting. Work is fun as the company has an open door policy, informal clothes are allowed, and he can listen to music.

Rajeev Shastry from Silverline, Mumbai is a mainframe programmer. Programming here is based on the design document that’s given by the client. Working on mainframes is different as the work is complex, requires disciplined working and a good hold on the concepts. When he started off he and his friends worked together on software projects for free just to gain the work experience. This helped open doors for them in the software industry.
