Overview of Admission Process
Overview of Entire Admission Process
The Admission Process for Graduate studies abroad has been outlined below. The process consists of three main phases :
The first phase consists of taking the requisite exams. For graduate studies in the US the exams that need to be taken are
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
The TWE (Test of Written English), TSE (Test of spoken English) if necessary.
The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) test, a computer adaptive test, is taken by individuals applying to graduate schools.
The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test), a computer adaptive test.
This is necessary for admission to graduate schools of business.
The second phase consists of the Post Examination process till the Visa Application process.
The first step is the Pre Application Process, where the student gets information and brochures about universities that he/she is interested in. Some universities require GRE scores to send the Application Forms. Typically a student looks at 20-25 Pre- Applications. The aim in this phase is to find out information about the schools suitable to you and to assess ones chances for admission and aid.
Second step is the application process. Typically a student has to send in a form (online or mailed) along with the relevant details (GRE score, transcripts, passport details, bachelors certificate, SOP and Letter of Recommendations). Typically a student applies to 12 universities spread through the institute rankings.
The process also comprises searching for the right area of study and exploring aid possibilities.
· To find out the field of studies and aid possibilities, search through the professors details on the school web sites. Typically a professor with 5-6 projects is said to have funds.
· To strengthen the chances of aid & admission you need to show keen interest in the research area. This can be done by focussing your projects, seminars and technical papers around your chosen area.
The third phase comprises Visa Formalities. The visa formalities are completed at the American Consulate in the Metros.
