Skill Check
SKILL CHECK
Before you decide to make a career move or just explore your chances in the job market it is always a good idea to take stock of your current competencies. One way is to do a self-evaluation.
SOFT SKILLS
Your ability to get a job depends on your ability to explain to an employer what you do well. Therefore you must determine what you do best before you write your résumé and before you go to an interview.
There are certain things you do well, and you have shown your abilities in the things you have accomplished. This exercise is designed to help you identify your skills.
Here are the steps:
List 15 accomplishments. That is 15 things you have felt good about having done. Think about academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities, work experiences, etc. This step takes time and thought. Choose 6 of these accomplishments and list them in the space provided on the following sheets. Take one accomplishment at a time, go down the skill checklist and check all the skills you used to achieve that particular accomplishment. Take the next accomplishment, check off the skills used, and so on, until you've done all six accomplishments. Circle the 6 skills that you have checked most frequently. You have just identified 6 skills that you have used in order to do well in the past...
When you attend an interview, it is essential to describe the accomplishments that demonstrate your skills. For example:
I am good at organizing my time and work effectively. I have shown this ability by working 20 hours a week while attending college, and getting a first class with an average of 75%.
OR
I write well. I have shown this skill by doing well in my written assignments in college and writing articles for the college news journal.
OR
I am good at planning and managing a task. As Vice President of the inter college cultural program I planned the advertisement collection drive and was responsible for managing the event.
IMPORTANT
When you attend an interview for a position, think about the skills that the employer may be looking for in the best candidate. Highlight your skills that best fit the job you are applying for.

TECHNICAL AND OPERATIONAL SKILLS
Expertise Level Grading based on guidelines given below will help you identify as well as develop primary and secondary skills you wish to project.
KNOWING YOUR EMPLOYERS
It is very important to know the company you are going to work for. The first thing to do is to identify their Key Success Factors and see how different it is from the current organization you are working in. See if you like what you find out and whether you can adapt easily.
MATCHING EXPECTATIONS
It would do you a great deal of good if before joining an organization you carry out a simple 2x2 analysis to see if your expectations are met.
POSITIONING YOURSELF
Positioning yourself is important in any job that you do but especially so when applying for a job. A professional generally operates in one of the following roles.
