Test Preparation
Your complete application includes your GRE/GMAT & TOEFL scores, essays (for GMAT), transcript, recommendations, work experience, awards and activities, writing sample, and publications (Technical Papers) if any.
It’s important to focus on each element of the application.
1 The first part is getting a good score; this is dealt with by the study material and practice tests.
2 The second is your past academics, this is also an important component of your application. In fact these two are the only objective criteria to compare students.
3 Letters of Recommendations: For GRE, it is important to obtain this letter from a distinguished academician or a person involved in some way with academics. Thus you can have a professional from the industry giving you a letter, but preferably some academic involvement. For MBA (GMAT) recommendations from people you have worked with are good. Typically schools look for comments from your superiors at work.
4 Statements of Purpose tell the admission committee about you. It is an opportunity to mention your achievements, interests and aims. It is an extremely important tool to convince professors of your suitability as a candidate.
5 Essays : This is specifically for MBA admissions (GMAT). The essays are to test the student for writing and analytical ability.
6 Work Experience is an important component especially for MBA, typically B-schools are looking for students with a fair amount of work experience. The average age of students pursuing an MBA in the US is about 28 years. For GRE work experience related to your area of study should strengthen your claim to admission and aid.
7 Awards & Activities show your interests and abilities. Your expertise/interest in the area of study is shown by work in that area. Hence projects and seminars should be chosen with your focus in mind. Another element that would strengthen your claim is participation/achievements in technical papers and quizzes. This has been successful for previous students. The information about technical papers, competitions can be got from the College Of Engineering Pune (Technical Papers), for GRE support. Details of quizzes, competitions relevant to b-schools will be available with management institutes.
8 There's another, "invisible" part of your application: your conversations with professors at certain schools and the impressions you left behind -- both vitally important. All of these factors affect your chances of admission. Even your ethnicity or region of origin can help you. This is mentioned as an example so that students manage this aspect of the process.
It is important to know that for all the elements of your application to fall in place you must begin preparation well in advance. The earlier that you decide on the area of study, the easier it would be to develop a well organised effort for admission into your dream school.
Talk to Them
It's impossible to over emphasise the importance of talking to the professors at the schools you're considering. Admission to graduate school isn't about standardised tests or GPAs. It's about people: the people in the academic community you're trying to join, and the people you've worked with in the past. The opinions of the professors in your prospective graduate program, together with the recommendations you receive from professors you've worked with, are the most significant determinants in the admissions process. When you're trying to gauge your chances of success in applying to a program, nothing tells you more than the opinions of the professors involved.
